Heritage Square
A little bit of history, a little bit of downtown, and lots of character!
Heritage Square is one of my favorite places for family photography in downtown Phoenix. If you love historic buildings, brick, old architecture, and lots of different textures, this location gives us plenty to work with.
The historic Victorian buildings create a beautiful backdrop, but there are also trees, grass, a rose garden, rustic wood architecture, a yellow rustic door, and even an urban look near the Arizona Science Center.
There are so many little spots to explore here, which makes it easy to create a gallery with lots of variety.
What Makes Heritage Square Special?
I love the character of this location! The historic buildings and brick give your photographs a timeless feel, while some of the more rustic and urban areas give us a completely different look.
Fall is especially beautiful here when the leaves begin to change colors.
This is also a wedding venue, so you may even see a wedding taking place while we're there. Because Heritage Square is in downtown Phoenix, there are occasionally events happening in the area. It's a good idea to plan your session for a day when there isn't a major event scheduled.
When Should We Go?
You can photograph here at almost any time of day. The buildings provide plenty of shade, and there are also opportunities for beautiful backlighting.
Because parking can be limited, I recommend arriving early. There is street parking, as well as a parking garage nearby, and you'll want to allow a little extra time to park and walk to our meeting location.
No photography permit is required for family sessions.
What Should We Wear?
With all of the brick and warm tones at Heritage Square, I recommend choosing a color palette that complements the location without blending into it.
If your family is wearing similar colors, add some dimension by mixing different textures such as knits, corduroy, and linen.
I would also avoid a lot of red and orange, since there is already quite a bit of brick and warm color throughout the location.
Muted, textured colors tend to photograph beautifully here and help your family stand out against the historic buildings.
